Since the escalation of the conflict in September 2024, triggered by increased Israeli airstrikes, the humanitarian situation in Lebanon has deteriorated dramatically. In just a few weeks, around 1.2 million people have been displaced from their home regions. Civilians from the south of the country have been particularly affected, including thousands of children, women and elderly people who were already struggling with Lebanon’s severe economic challenges.
Some 258,000 people have sought refuge in neighboring Syria, while 8,000 Lebanese have fled to Iraq to escape the incessant bombardment. In the midst of this chaos, Lebanon has been hosting 1.5 million Syrian refugees for years, most of whom live in overcrowded, improvised camps. The Bekaa Valley in particular, a region that is now itself at the center of the fighting, is currently providing makeshift shelter for around 900,000 Syrians in tents and temporary shelters. They live without any other support from the Lebanese government, without the right to set up their own tent or rent their own apartment.
International aid is far from sufficient to meet the immense needs, while the traumatized refugees continue to suffer from the catastrophic conditions and the constant threat of new attacks.
Aid organizations on the ground, such as our partner organization Salam, are desperately fighting against the massive lack of resources. They organize first aid courses and care for women and children in various Lebanese and Syrian camps, and the school bus that we bought during our last mission on site is still hard at work. Every day, Salam distributes 700 to 850 hot meals in Lebanese and Syrian camps to alleviate the suffering of the refugees. However, the supply of essential goods such as food, drinking water and medicines remains critically inadequate. We from Avicenna support Salam in providing hot meals and urgently need their help to continue this work.
All this is only possible with your support. Thank you for your donation!
